Wallsend-Built HMS Ark Royal Sold For Scrap Metal To Turkish Recycling Firm

After serving Britain for over 25 years, Tyneside's HMS Ark Royal is to be dismantled and sold for scrap metal.

The aircraft carrier, built at Wallsend's Swan Hunter ship yard in 1978, could have become a diving wreck or a nightclub.

But now it risks being made into bean cans and tin foil as Turkish ship dismantling company Leyal win a £3m bid to recycle it.

The firm - which also dismantled sister vessel HMS Invincible in 2011 - are responsible for breaking down the ship and recycling the metal.
